J’ai pris l’habitude de photographier les plantes, et surtout les fleurs, qui poussent dans les lieux où mes reportages me conduisent. Pour chaque espèce, je cueille un exemplaire que je ramène à l’endroit où je réside pour le photographier sur un coin de table improvisé en mini studio, à l’aide d’une boîte à lumière et de flashs (NB. dans le cas d’espèces protégées, je transporte le matériel sur le terrain, ce qui s’avère plus délicat, forcément). Il n’y a aucune volonté d’être exhaustif, il s’agit juste de quelques espèces qui ont attiré mon regard au cours des déambulations du reportage.

Toutes les espèces ne se prêtent pas facilement à se faire tirer le portrait avec cette technique et cela ne marche pas toujours (pour les espèces aux couleurs blanches et très claires, pour les grandes plantes ou très petites plantes…), mais quand cela marche, cela permet de véritablement entrer dans l’intimité et la beauté des espèces et d’observer des détails fascinants. C’est alors tout un monde qui se révèle.

I have gotten into the habit of photographing plants, and especially flowers, that grow in places where my assignments lead me. For each species, I pick up one that I take back to the place where I live to photograph it on an improvised table corner in a mini studio, using a light box and flashes (NB. in the case of protected species, I transport the equipment on the field, which is more delicate, necessarily). There is no desire to be exhaustive, it’s just a few species that caught my eye during the wanderings of the assignment.

Not all species lend themselves easily to being photographed with this technique and it does not always work (for species with white and very light colors, for large plants or very small plants…), but when it works, this allows one to truly enter into the intimacy and beauty of species and observe fascinating details. It is then a whole world that reveals itself.
